Volkswagen’s Gran Turismo Injection (GTI) badge has adorned the rear hatch of seven generations of Golf over the last 40 years. Apart from the lardy, impotent Mk3 we’ve coveted every single version – in varying degrees. But none more so than this GTI TCR.
Yes, yes, we know you can’t pop off down to your local dealer to buy one, but it doesn’t stop us wishing we could. Forget for a moment, if possible, the sensational visual fireworks and focus on the specs: 243kW and 410Nm from its 2.0-litre turbo four driving the front wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox, 0-100kph in 5.2 seconds, a top speed of 230kph despite the massive injection of downforce provided by the carbonfibre rear wing and a chassis 400mm wider than standard.
Sadly, VW has only built 20 of these 2016-spec touring cars for customer sports teams. Your best chance of seeing them in action is in the TCR International Series beginning 2 April 2016 in Bahrain. YouTube channel TCR TV. 2016 series coverage on DSTV SuperSport still TBC
