Audi has added a Sportback bodyshell to the fast-growing European A5 model range. The four-door hatchback follows the recently released convertible and the two-year old coupe. Audi claims the extended wheelbase (up 59mm on the coupe) of the A5 Sportback offers head and leg room ‘comparable with A4 Saloon.’ Luggage capacity with the rear seats in place is a handy 480 litres. Launch engines are the familiar 2.0-litre TFSI, 3.2-litre V6 FSI, 2.0-litre TDI and 3.0-litre V6 TDI.
For a while now, both motoring journalists and the general public have been shaking their heads, questioning why manufacturers keep answering questions no one was asking, inventing niches in already solid model lineups. Is this a similar case? Surely a car like this will cannibalise A4 sedan and Avant sales?
