Next year, 23 February 2013 to be precise, Phakisa Raceway in Welkom will host the inaugural African 6 Hour Endurance Race. It’s the only circuit in South Africa capable of hosting the event having held several successful world championships of this nature since its inception in the 1990’s.
The Welkom 6 Hour, organised by Classic Car Events, will incorporate the north-west banked section of the oval in conjunction with the road race circuit to create a 4.4km track which should challenge competitors and provide excellent vantage points for the crowds. So, all sorts of closed wheel race cars will be invited to participate, but in this instance National, Regional and Club vehicles can all vie for the win.
Ultimately, it’s a six hour race in the spirit of endurance racing events of the past such as the International 9 Hour and Springbok Series (of the 1960s), the 1000km long races of the 80s and the World Sportscar events of the 90s. It starts on the Saturday at 2pm and ends at 8pm followed the following morning by a prize giving ceremony for those still sober enough to receive them. Sounds like fun!
