Volkswagen Sasolracing’s Henk Lategan has jetted to Greece to contest the Acropolis Rally as part of the FIA’s European Rally Championship.
In preparation for the Acropolis Rally, which takes place from March 28 to 30, he stopped over in Austria to spend time testing with the BRR (Baumschlager Rallye & Racing) team.
The 19-year old contested two international events in 2013 and achieved his best result – a fifth overall – in Croatia.
‘Competing in Europe can be very different to competing here in South Africa,’ Lategan says.
‘The road surfaces, the stage layouts and also the language can often be obstacles that need to be overcome. It certainly adds a different dimension to competing there.
‘The Acropolis Rally takes place on both gravel and tar. There is a very strong entry list and I’m expecting it will be a tough weekend; not just facing the top drivers and teams there, but also the unfamiliar stages.’
For the event, Lategan will be joined in the car by Klaus Wicha, who has competed in rallies for more than 30 years.
The duo will contest a Skoda Fabia S2000 in the RC2 class.
Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport, says: ‘It helps to keep our talented competitors up to the levels of international competition. Henk is going to be in strong company, this is a good measure for us to gauge his progress.’
