Rounds 13 and 14 of the Formula BMW Pacific championship took competitors to the 3.7 km Okayama International Circuit in Japan where they were a support act to the FIA World Touring Car championship.
Zimbabwean Axcil Jefferies rated the circuit highly and with three drivers in contention for the title, plus a number of guest drivers thrown in for good measure, making qualifying very tactical.
Although Jefferies ended second fastest behind Spain’s Facu Regalia, his Eurasia team had the most to smile about. "I think I messed up a little bit at the beginning, but second is good for the championship as Facu is not a regular contender. At this point, my first priority is to win the Rookie Cup and Junior Title. If I’m lucky, I will have a chance to win the Drivers Classification. I still believe it’s possible," said the Air Zimbabwe and Pioneer Corporation backed driver.
Round 13 took place on Saturday but was not a happy outing for the Zimbabwean Childline Ambassador. On the opening lap, Jefferies was involved in a multi car incident which prematurely ended his race. Regalia took an easy win while second place went to Rio Haryanto.
Round 14, on Sunday, started behind the safety car due to heavy rain and Jefferies took seventh place. Regalia scored his second win of the weekend, but another second place was enough for Harryanto to claim the F/BMW Pacific title.
Jefferies claimed the F/BMW Pacific Junior title and third in the overall standings as he ended the season as runner-up in the Rookie challenge.
